Oberbayern: A Harmonious Blend of Design and Environment

Designer Fabio Su's Award-Winning Residential House

Fabio Su's 'Oberbayern' is a residential house design that stands as a testament to the unity of human, space, and environment. This unique architectural piece, inspired by origami, has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2019.

The Oberbayern, designed by Fabio Su, is a striking construction that combines architectural lines with an origami-inspired style. The building's exterior features an overlapping structure of as-cast-finish mold and plate mold, creating interesting gradations of light and shade. The design is further enhanced with bamboo branch embellishments, presenting a yin-and-yang combination of hardness and softness.

The house is constructed using corrugated steel bars, natural rock sheets, granite wall stones, and exposed concrete. The building occupies a lot size of 438 square meters, with an internal floor space of approximately 848 square meters. The four-floor house includes a garage, pool, living room, cooking and dining area, video room, meeting room, four bedrooms, a sitting room, studio, and study room.

The design team, led by Fabio Su, included Chiou Yu-Jr as the designer assistant. The team drew inspiration from various architectural elements from Japanese, Chinese, and South American cultures to realize a postmodern design. The house's exterior wall, inspired by the beauty of mountains, makes the house appear like an oasis in the city.

The design project started in June 2012 in Chiayi City and was completed in June 2013. The construction phase spanned from June 2013 to December 2015. The design was realized with an audacious and eco-friendly approach, using origami skills for the wall design and eco-friendly materials for the ground to maintain soil moisture.

The design faced several challenges, including the construction of the enclosing wall, which is covered with several pieces of cement cut in different thicknesses and placed at different angles to receive sunlight. The living room wall is made up of several rocks, each weighing more than 100 kg, requiring advanced architectural techniques for installation. The playground was paved with eco-friendly material to allow rainwater to easily penetrate the ground and maintain soil moisture.

In conclusion, the Oberbayern is a remarkable design that showcases the unity of human, space, and environment. It is a testament to Fabio Su's belief in the profundity and significance of space, as well as his commitment to sustainability and environmental coexistence. The design's recognition with the Silver A' Design Award in 2019 further underscores its outstanding expertise and innovation.
